A picture is worth a thousand words—and better yet—a picture can now be worth much more, with new abilities from Instagram’s advertising platform.

The announcement that Instagram would be opening up advertising opportunities for all businesses has been well received by digital marketing advertisers everywhere. Even if you aren’t a digital marketing expert, Instagram’s impressive statistics of 300 million active users and 75 million users daily, will entice anyone to look deeper into the platform’s capabilities.

Instagram quietly revealed the long-awaited announcement in a lengthy blog post stating, “People come to Instagram for visual inspiration, and advertising on Instagram has the power to touch, inspire and move people. Instagram ads have proven to drive strong branding results—97% of measured campaigns on Instagram have generated significant lifts in ad recall.” With new updates such as optimization and reporting tools to track and manage campaigns and longer video features, Instagram advertising will be a vital ingredient to add to your digital marketing recipe for success and change the game, forever.

1. It Will Create Competition

Most digital marketing campaigns come with a well-organized strategy and social advertising budget, and most campaign leaders know where to divide their spend between platforms. Now, digital marketers will be inviting an extra player to the game.

Instagram’s parent company Facebook is no newbie to the advertising scene, as well as other popular forms of social media and display advertising; but Instagram offers something different. Brands such as Mercedes-Benz have been able to increase traffic to their site by over 500% after a launch of a widely successful Instagram campaign. Digital marketers will now consider incorporating Instagram advertising into their blueprints, which could lead to less spend in a former platform such as Facebook or Twitter.

2. It Will Change the Way We View Brands

Instagram allows users to become professional photographers in a matter of seconds, with an abundance of editing and filtering options. Now brands will have to open up their creative sides to consumers, if they haven’t already done so.

Chobani was able to completely transform their brand perception by showing users other uses for their popular product, greek yogurt. Brands will need to create innovative strategies to come up with visuals that will engage and speak to users with graphics will be the bigger picture.

3. It Will Enlighten a New Era of Social Media Advertising

When social media platforms rise in popularity, advertisers are swift to jump on opportunities to market to these large audiences. With Google and the importance of good content marketing, and Facebook and the importance of quality targeted audiences, the same goes for Instagram.

Instagram lets users take a more creative route, with a platform of posting, editing and sharing photographs and videos. This advertising update will change the way brands share information and products with users. User-generated content is more important than ever, and this concept has already been used in several brands Instagram strategies.
